I grew up in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in an era when punctuation and essay writing were taught in schools. Since graduating with an arts degree from Trinity College Dublin I have travelled and worked around the world, notably in Amsterdam, Tokyo and Malaysia, cleaning airplanes, proof-reading and teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL). My husband and I co-wrote an anecdotal book about our four years in Malaysia; 'In Malaysia' was published by Bradt Publications in 1986. A German translation was published in 1987 as part of the Abenteuer-Report series and reprinted in 1989. In the 1980s I worked for Mary Glasgow Publications in London, writing magazines (Clockwork, Crown and Catch) for the EFL market. After moving to Australia, I wrote several EFL readers, published by Heinemann, Longman and Prentice Hall.
In 1992 I was employed as a natural history writer for the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, producing articles chiefly for Tropical Topics newsletters and booklets and a weekly Ranger Diary column for The Cairns Post (1994-2003). I have also written freelance travel articles for various publications. My book, Australian Wildlife, was published by Bradt Travel Guides in August 2010, and as a second edition in 2020.
